5th grade has been working on art with the big idea of empathy!
We did an exercise where we practiced deep listening and created art for 5th grade peers. After that, we combined empathy with a brand new art skill- sewing!
I had kindergarteners decorate monsters a few weeks ago, not telling them what it was for. They were told to make it unique and have fun with it.
Then, each 5th grader was assigned a kindergartener's monster to sew out of felt! Some of them were brand new to hand sewing, and some had more practice. I told them that the kindergarteners would not be expecting perfect sewing, but to ask themselves "how would I feel if someone made this for me?" This pushed my 5th graders to make better projects than they thought possible!
After each kindergarten monster has been completed, we will be presenting them to the kindergarteners as gifts. If you have scanned the code to get to this page, that means your child received their monster. I hope they like it, and appreciate all the work that went into it by a very caring 5th grader!
